The Philosothon (www.philosothon.org) is a program designed to develop the ability of students to critically analyse ideas and concepts, improve skills in argumentation and to collaboratively explore philosophical issues. The Philosothon has developed a very significant profile over the last few years both nationally and internationally. This is your school’s chance to be involved in a major event directly linked to improving educational outcomes.
Facilitators will include professional philosophers from the University of Queensland and current teachers in Philosophy and Reason.
The 2019 UQ Philosothon is scheduled for Saturday 11 May, 9:15 am – 2:30 pm, University of Queensland (St Lucia). A map will be provided on registration.
Each school should aim to provide competitors in the age groups below.
(Ideally 4 students should be nominated in each team)
- Senior Division A (Years 10-12),
- Senior Division B (Years 7-9) and
- Primary (Years 4-6)
Reserves may compete in the place of a competitor provided the facilitators are informed.

Registration information
1. All student teams are to be accompanied by a teacher from the school. No materials are required. Topics will be released to participating schools prior to the Philosothon and students can review their notes regarding the topics prior to commencing the Communities of Inquiry.
2. Cost: $22 per student (inc. GST) to cover expenses for the day. Details of electronic payment will be made available on registration of teams. Note that support materials will be provided to schools well before the event, including the topics for discussion on the day.
3. Please register Senior teams (7-12) before March 30 via email to the coordinator Peter Ellerton (peter.ellerton@uq.edu.au). Individual students will be need to be registered by Friday April 26 and this will be via a shared online document (link forthcoming with registration of teams).
